Young California boy contracts brain-eating amoeba and dies
- A 7-year-old boy named David Pruitt has died about a week after swimming in a Tehama County-area lake where he contracted a rare brain-eating amoeba
- According to the family, David was flown to UC Davis Medical Center on July 30 where he was diagnosed with “primary amebic meningoencephalitis (or PAM)
- According to the Tehama County Health Services Agency, there have only been 10 PAM cases reported in California since 1971
