California unemployment claims remain high despite new job additions
- Employers in California are hiring more and more people (a record-breaking pace) as the state’s unemployment claims remain high

Northern California wildfires cause National Forest lands to close
- On Thursday, August 19, the U.S. Forest Service announced that on August 22, they will close nine national forests from Lake Tahoe at the Nevada border to the Six Rivers National Forest
- More than 650 firefighters and 13 helicopters, and air tankers have flown fire suppression missions there as conditions allowed, authorities said
